The Federation of Protestant Youth in Italy (FGEI) was founded in 1969 on the wave of the student struggle, by joining the Federation of the Waldensian Youth Unions, the Evangelical Methodist Youth and the Baptist Youth Movement. The FGEI is a network of local groups and individuals coming from the Protestant churches, which aims to be a place to reflect and witness together as Christians in society.
Its main governing body is the National Congress, which decides upon its activity, organisation and thematic work. The Congress is composed of delegates appointed by the local groups, meets once every thirty months and elects the national Council.
The FGEI has close relationships with the Youth Retreat Centres of the Protestant churches in Italy, especially with "Adelfia" (Sicily), "Agape" (Piedmont) and "Ecumene" (near Rome).
The FGEI is active in the ecumenical youth movement. On the international level it is a member of the World Student Christian Federation (WSCF) and the Ecumenical Youth Council of Europe (EYCE). On the national level it was one of the organisers of the first Ecumenical Youth Conference in Italy, which took place in Florence in January 2005 under the headline "Daring Peace through Faith" focussing on Justice, Peace and the Integrity of Creation.
The FGEI publishes a newsletter and a magazine. The newsletter is meant as a way to connect and inform the local groups and is published once every two months attached to the Protestant weekly paper "Riforma". "Gioventù evangelica - GE" (Protestant Youth) is published every three months and is an important arena for reflection and debate for both the FGEI and Italian Protestantism as a whole, offering high-level essays and studies on political and theological issues. |
